Located in Gresham, Oregon, Riley & Karen Caton produce digital images for use in
local, national, and international media. Their digital images are marketed internationally
by AGE fotostock of Barcelona, Spain. They create commercial, human interest, industrial,
landscape, fine art, and wildlife images for print and web media. They are members of the
American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and North American Nature Photography Association
(NANPA).
Riley & Karen have been active volunteers in their home community of Gresham. Together they served as co-presidents of Mt. Hood Repertory Theater Company board, a professional theatre company. Riley served on the board of the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association and was Secretary and on the executive board for the Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce. Karen served on several non-profit boards including the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, MetroEast Community Media, Gresham Downtown Development Association, and the Oregon Fire Chiefs Foundation.
In 2005, Riley & Karen began providing contract consulting services to the public safety community through Emergency Services Consulting inc. (ESCi), a national consulting firm. Their primary focus has been the facilitation and development of strategic plans for public safety agencies. They have also conducted organizational evaluations and master planning projects.
Riley retired as the fire chief of Gresham Fire and Emergency Services in 2004,
after 30 plus years of emergency service experience, having served in nearly every capacity
of the department. He started taking pictures in high school for the newspaper and year book.
The Hillsboro Argus, a small daily newspaper, published Riley's photographs and hired him for
local assignments. After high school, Riley continued to nurture his interest in photography
during his career in the fire service. During that period, he took assignments for The
Associated Press and a variety of commercial clients.
His work has been published in many magazines, including Newsweek, Life, Outside, the European edition of Time, and Knapsack. His work has also appeared in the New York Times, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, and other newspapers across the U.S. His film images have been represented by FPG International (New York), H. Armstrong Roberts (Philadelphia), and Adventure Photo (Ventura). He has also served as a photography instructor for the Travel Division of American Writers and Artists, Inc. (AWAI).
Karen has over 30 years of education, business, and disaster response experience.
This experience includes special education teaching in the public school system, administrative
and organizational management in the corporate business world, and disaster response and
hazard mitigation work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), responding to
17 federally declared disasters across the United States and the Territory of Guam.
Karen has taken pictures all her life, but is a newbie to professional photography. She is learning every stage of the photography business on the fast track! and has had photographs published in the Gresham Outlook (including the cover page of the Gresham Fact Book 2008) and The Oregonian newspapers. In addition to photography, she writes a weekly Neighborhood News column for The Oregonian newspaper.
